How to Order

A custom made knife makes a fantastic gift. It is something which you will always treasure and ordering a custom made knife from me couldn't be easier. All you have to do is go to my Contact Page and either send me an email or give me a call. It's that simple

Knowing what you want to order is the first, most critical step. If you have a clear picture in your mind of what your dream knife will look like then it's pretty easy to get the build underway. I put this page together to help you to order a knife and hopefully it will make the process of visualizing your custom knife as easy as possible.

So let's consider the following ....

Purpose

What's the knife for ?
It might be a simple question but the answer sets every other part of the knifemaking process in action. Different knives serve different purposes and it's important to be clear on what the purpose of your knife will be.
Perhaps it's for...

Knowing the answer to this question to begin with, can help make the design process so much easier.

The Blade

Give some thought as to what kind of blade you would like. The Composition, Grind, Length, Thickness and Shape of the blade all help to make up the characteristics of that one of a kind custom knife ..

Blade Length
It is important to know what length your blade is to be and when you consider the first question it's purpose then the length should become quite obvious. I have made knives with blades of up to 14 inches (350mm) but for most tasks anything between 2.5 inches (62.5mm) and 5 inches (125mm) should easily suffice.

Steel Composition
Some steels serve better at certain tasks than others. High carbon steels will keep a fine sharp edge but may rust easily, while other stainless steels, will resist rusting and colorizing or patina, but will require more frequent sharpening. Steels can vary a lot, as can their prices. Certain Mosaic Damascus Blades can be very expensive to aqquire

.

Blade Grind
Be sure to clarify what way you would like your blade ground I prefer to work with Scandi ground blades but I can accomodate other grinding styles (Flat Ground, Convex, Chisel etc.) if you wish.

Blade Thickness
Blade thickness is a personal preference. The thicker the blade the heavier and stronger the knife. However a thick bladed knife won't be much good for filleting fish and a slim bladed knife won't do so well for battoning or splitting firewood. Take some time to give this a little thought. Personally I like to carry a 1/8" (3mm) blade

Blade Shape
Long narrow bladed knives are excellent for filleting fish or dressing small game. Shorter Deep Bellied knives make great skinning knives

Blade Finish
Would you like a mirror finish? or perhaps you'd prefer a satin finish? maybe something a little more rustic? or even a bead blasted finish.

The Handle

There are all sorts of possibilities for the knife handle. Choices and combinations of materials are practically endless, so to have a basic understanding of what you would like would be of great benefit

Full Tang or Hidden Tang
My first question would be whether you wanted a full tang or a hidden tang knife

Material
What type of material would you like in your handle. I prefer to work with Stabilized wood or Bog oak and other natural materials such as horn, bone or antler. I can make suggestions but this will be entirely down to you

.

Fixtures and Fittings
Do you require bolsters, what type of material would you like for pins etc. Brass, Stainless Steel, Nickel Silver, Silver spacers etc. perhaps you might like mosaic pins and maybe a lanyard tube.... give this some time

The Sheath

I love the look and feel of a well crafted hand sewn leather sheath but there are a few possibilities here also

Colour
What colour sheath would you like

Carrying Position
How would you like to carry the knife? Are you left or right handed? Perhaps you'd prefer a crossdraw ? Something that hangs at the side of your leg or is mounted high up on your shoulder

Extras
Do you require a firesteel holder ? Do you need a tie down for your leg ?

The Price

My prices range from €200 - €500
When you consider the time and materials involved, I think that's reasonable for a one of a kind, custom, handmade knife. But do you ?

All Done :)
